JOB SUMMARY

The Emergency Communication Officer is responsible for managing all communication services during critical incidents, including firefighting operations, hazardous materials incidents, and other emergencies. Responsible for recording events that are reported or called in. Requires a calm demeanor while providing fast and accurate responses to emergency and non-emergency situations. Maintains accurate call logs, activities, reports, requests and other related information.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responds to requests for information, monitors several first responder radio frequencies to coordinate dispatching of services between two or more agencies.
  • Coordinates major incidents to ensure that proper notifications are made; assists in call handling if necessary and coordinates with Incident Command.
  • Ensures technical equipment is properly maintained, regularly serviced and fully functional.
  • Completes reports and correspondence relating to dispatch activities in a timely manner.
  • In case of emergency or other necessity, transfers operations to and sets up the ECC Operations alternate center.
  • Participates in the Annual Training Plan.
  • Respond to notifications of a recall and report to the Emergency Communication Center or other designated location for assignment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • IFSAC or ProBoard certifications to include Fire Instructor I, Telecommunicator I/II, and HazMat Awareness.
  • Have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to develop effective working relationships.
  • Have at least 3 years of relevant experience is desired.
  • Be proficient with Microsoft Office.
  • Communicate effectively in writing, on the telephone and in person with staff, clients, and members of the public.
  • Detail orientated, with experience in managing multiple activities.
  • Experience or other qualifications that demonstrate strong decision-making skills, excellent interpersonal communication and conflict resolution skills, and ability to successfully supervise, motivate, correct, train, and evaluate assigned staff.
  • Employee must be able to fluently read, write, speak, and understand English.
  • Able to work independently and prioritize work in a systematic way.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK CONDITIONS

  • Physical requirements may include lifting up to 35 lbs., team lifting up to 50 lbs., climbing, extended standing, stretching, or bending.
  • Ability to sit and concentrate for extended periods but also have the mobility to respond immediately to emergency incidents.
  • Willing to be flexible regarding working hours and respond quickly to time sensitive or urgent requirements.
  • Ability to live and work in harsh climatic and austere living conditions to include the potential for moderate to extreme physical danger.
