Information Desk Assistant – Library

We are looking for highly organized candidates with excellent interpersonal skills for the position of Information Desk Assistant. Information Desk Assistants is responsible for sorting and shelving books according to their categorization, assisting customers with internet access, and ensuring their technical needs are met. They also manage inquiries over the counter, via email or telephone, among other duties.

This position will report directly to the Reference Services Librarian


Abilities and responsibilities of the incumbent:

  • Provides friendly and effective customer service to all library patrons
  • Serves at the circulation desk on daily shifts on weekdays and alternate shifts on weekends
  • Develops expert knowledge of the patron interface of OCLC WMS, the LSP used by the AUIB Library
  • Assists in addressing questions and requests from library patrons in person, by phone, or via electronic means
  • Ensures that materials returned from loan and/or retrieved from the shelves are collated daily and ready for shelving
  • Assists to keep the library website updated and verifies that links remain active
  • Manages and keeps records of the lost and found service
  • Coordinates with janitorial services to keep the library facilities clean and appealing
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by his/her supervisor


Requirements for the position:

  • Bachelor’s degree in library science, information science, or related discipline
  • A minimum of two years of customer service experience dealing directly with the public
  • Proficiency in using MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
  • Possesses good communication skills in Arabic and English
  • Flexible, dependable, creative, and able to multi-task
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision
  • Able to professionally interact with patrons, co-workers, and supervisors
  • Capable to maintain discretion and manage confidential information appropriately
  • Able to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Prepared to work on shift and rotationally during weekends and holidays
