The British Embassy Baghdad has a vacancy for AC Technician Assistant and Estates Project Support on a fixed term contract for two (2) years.
As AC Technician Assistant, the jobholder will take on a variety of hands-on tasks, including many responsibilities typically performed by a full AC technician. As Estates Project Support, the jobholder will also provide escorting duties of contractor staff and their vehicles, as well as providing all around general support on estates projects. This role provides an opportunity for growth and development within the HVAC field, with exposure to more complex tasks in air conditioning systems.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Assist with the installation of split, window, and portable AC units in the Embassy compound.
- Help with mounting AC units, connecting refrigerant lines, and installing electrical components.
- Assist with ensuring proper system setup, including verifying that refrigerant levels and airflows are correctly calibrated.
- Support in wiring air conditioning units, including connecting thermostats, sensors, and control panels.
- Perform routine inspections and maintenance tasks, including cleaning filters, coils, and condensers.
- Check refrigerant levels and refill as needed, ensuring the unit operates at peak efficiency.
- Help with the replacement of worn-out parts, such as fans, motors, and filters.
- Lubricate moving parts and check for any unusual noises or vibrations.
- Assist in diagnosing and troubleshooting problems with air conditioning systems, such as leaks, blockages, and system malfunctions.
- Help in identifying and repairing or replacing malfunctioning components, such as compressors, condensers, and evaporators.
- Strictly adhere to safety protocols while working with electrical systems, refrigerants, and moving parts.
- Assist in installing and sealing ductwork to ensure proper airflow throughout the home.
- Check for and repair leaks in duct systems that could impact AC efficiency.
- Handle simpler maintenance tasks, such as cleaning coils, changing filters, and performing basic repairs, often independently.
- Provide escorting of contractor vehicles and staff from the IZ check point gates to the Embassy and return.
- Provide escorting of contractors on site.
- Provide general support to contractors.
- Undertake all other duties as requested by management.
The above list is not exhaustive, and the jobholder will be required to be flexible as specific responsibilities could change in the future and this would be at the discretion of the line manager. The job description may be reviewed to meet changes in business needs. The jobholder may also take on other ad hoc tasks as required.

Eligibility:
If you are selected for this position, we will be able to employ you as long as:
- We can obtain the appropriate level of local and UK security clearance for you; and
- You have (or be willing to obtain) the right to live and work in Iraq. Candidate’s residence permit and work permit, and the expense to obtain them, will be their own responsibility – the Embassy does not provide residence or work permits. If you have any questions about residency and/ or visa requirements, you should contact the relevant Iraqi Government Ministry.
- Relevant work experience as an AC technician or equivalent, ideally for at least two (2) years.
- Solid knowledge of HVAC systems, including installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of air conditioning units.
- Strong work ethic and willingness to learn from experienced technicians.
- Ability to follow instructions closely. Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Fluent communication skills in Arabic, both spoken and written.
- Ability to work independently and to work well with others.
- Sound interpersonal skills. Demonstrates courtesy and consideration in dealing with staff and other stakeholders.
- Able to express ideas and messages in English (at least basic/ conversational level).
- Holds a clean and valid driver’s license.
- Relevant certification in HVAC or air-conditioning.
The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including up to 21 days of annual leave (calculated pro-rata).
The role grade is S3, with a base salary of US$ 986 per month. This base salary is paid 13 times a year. In addition, the role attracts a security allowance payable as part of this package. This security allowance is subject to review and may be altered or withdrawn at any time.
No accommodation nor relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.
This position is for a full-time employment on a fixed-term contract basis for two (2) years. Employment is also subject to a 90-day probationary period.
Conditioned working hours are 38 hours per week. Normal working hours are Sunday to Wednesday from 08:00 to 16:00 and Thursday from 08:00-14:00. The jobholder will be required to be flexible in their approach to hours worked as these will be dictated by operational needs and will involve working out of hours (evenings/ weekends/ holidays) in the event of an emergency.
The Embassy encourages a culture of continuous learning. Training will be given in the role. All employees have access to the Civil Service Learning platform, which gives access to training to improve job specific skills. Employees are entitled to a minimum number of annual training days.
