Duty station: Wchan Organization for Victims of Human Rights
Violation- Sulaymaniyah Office with frequent visits to the fields including Wchan suboffices inside Reformatories and Erbil.
Duration of Contract: 7 Months

Summary of Position:
The Mental Health Counselor (Psychotherapist) provides specialized mental health
services to program beneficiaries who have suffered severe forms of human rights
violations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Clinical Skills:

  • Provides comprehensive mental health support to program beneficiaries, weekly
    base or regularly based on identified client need.
  • Provides mental health counselling support based on organizational guidelines
    and best practice interventions.
  • Maintains a commitment to high ethical standards.
  • Expertise in developing and maintaining a therapeutic relationship with clients
    that are professional, trustworthy and confidential.
  • Specialization or basic training in one or more treatments for mental health
    concerns or symptoms related to trauma (for example, PM+, CETA, NET, TF-CBT).
  • Demonstrates exceptional clinical and therapeutic skills in supporting individuals
    who have experienced severe human rights abuses.
  • Demonstrates an ability to reflect on clinical strengths or weaknesses and consult
    with clinical supervisors to develop professionally.
  • Coordinates and collaborates with the clinical staff on potential clients to be
    referred to therapy.
  • Participates in advocacy, crisis intervention, counseling and problem solving in
    medical and mental health care for program beneficiaries.
  • Maintains client case record and documentation of services in a timely manner as
    requested by agency.
  • Participates in regular, weekly individual and group clinical supervisions and
    clinical meetings at the Trauma Rehabilitation and Training Center and other
    stations per request.
  • Consults with program team which may include the Supervisor, Psychiatrist,
    Psychologist, Physician, Physiotherapist and Case Manager as needed.
  • Adheres to professional clinical guidelines and procedures developed by the
    organization.
  • Initiates clinical consultation with supervisor or Mental Health Manager in
    situations of identified risk to client or other known parties and maintains detailed
    clinical records related to situations of risk in a timely manner as requested by
    agency.
  • Initiates requests for assistance or guidance from Supervisor/s to address issues
    affecting adherence to professional standards.
  • Serves program beneficiaries without regard to ethnicity, gender, religion or
    income and abides by basic human rights principles while conducting activities
    associated with this position.

Program Development:

  • Assists with developing client materials.
  • Assists with developing client services package.
  • Act as a trainer during training courses

Program Coordination and Outreach:

  • Provides weekly consultation with center staff and other stations related staff to
    ensure problem solving and quality assurance of overall clinical care.
  • Provides weekly consultation regarding individual, family and group
    psychotherapy intervention as needed and as determined by the program model.
  • Participates in program meetings, presents at clinical case reviews and other
    related activities with team.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with external providers.
  • Participates in weekly consultations with supervisor and other related staff to
    review intakes and determine case acceptance.
  • Support other joiner counselors in the documentation, work related coordination.

Monitoring and Evaluation:

  • Record and review clients’ files regularly to identify client needs, complete the
    defect of the files.
  • Adheres to Wchan /TRTC reporting format and system.
  • Report timely to Mental Health Director and direct supervisor on client services.

Other duties and responsibilities:

  • Assists other staff with issues as they arise.
  • Participates as needed in other Wchan programs.
  • Provides training and supervision to the other groups like health staff, teachers
    and volunteers as needed by agency request.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum BA degree in psychology, preferably clinical/ counseling psychology.
  • Skill in Arabic language is essential; English language is a plus.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstration of leadership skills in clinical teams.
  • Demonstrated excellence in therapeutic treatment of clients as consistently
    reviewed by Supervisor(s) and Mental Health Manager.
  • Demonstrated excellence in maintaining ethical standards as consistently
    reviewed by Supervisor(s) and Mental Health Manager.
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Can work and stay in other cities.
  • Willingness to do extra work and as a volunteer.
