Job Description
Under guidance and direct supervision of the Field Security Specialist, the Security Driver provides reliable and safe driving services to the operations and programme staff in the Basra Office, consultants and experts and UN staff on mission and other UN officials and high-ranking visitors ensuring highest standards of discretion and integrity, sense of responsibility, excellent knowledge of protocol and security issues.
It is important to note that the Security Driver is a local national with vocational experience in security who must always conduct his/her functions in close cooperation with UNDSS and under the direct supervision of and be accountable to the UNDP CO FSS.
The Security Driver provides reliable and safe driving services to the operations and programme staff in the Basra Office, consultants and experts and UN staff on mission and other UN officials and high-ranking visitors ensuring highest standards of discretion and integrity, sense of responsibility, excellent knowledge of protocol and security issues.
The Security Driver also demonstrates a client-oriented approach, courtesy, tact and ability to work with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.
UNDP adopts a portfolio approach to accommodate changing business needs and leverage linkages across interventions to achieve its strategic goals. Therefore, UNDP personnel are expected to work across units, functions, teams, and projects in multidisciplinary teams in order to enhance and enable horizontal collaboration.
- Function as a driver within a team of security personnel responsible for the transportation of passengers under conditions and circumstances of increased security threats
- Transport staff members to various destinations as and when required, within the boundaries of the UN Security Policies and Procedures for Iraq
- Personally responsible for the safety and security of all passengers entrusted to his care
- Must have a detailed working knowledge of the UN security policies and procedures for Iraq, particularly in relation to transportation of UN personnel.
- Strictly adhere to all UN security rules and regulations at all times
- Drive both non-armoured as well as armoured vehicles.
- Planning of routes, in conjunction Security Units, ensuring the safety of passengers at all times
- Maintain a close liaison with the UNDP and the UNAMI Security Units ensuring a detailed knowledge of the most safest routes within the region
- Ensure that the assigned vehicle is fully operational and well maintained including inventory of all the necessary communication and emergency equipment readily available and tightly secured in their assigned vehicles such as first-aid kit, fire extinguisher, serviceable spare wheel, wheel changing kit, spare keys, torch, spare water, jumper cable & tow rope;
- Maintain vehicle log books for daily trips and keep records of mileage and fuel consumption of each vehicle.
- Ensure that the assigned vehicles are maintained regularly in accordance to service records of each vehicle and when required.
- Ensure that the assigned vehicles are in good operational conditions: conducting daily checks (oil, fuel, brakes, tyres, battery, tool kits, etc) on all assigned vehicles and before the commencement of any trip/mission, and reporting of any defects to the FSA for immediate repairs and maintenance
- Ability to carry out minor mechanical emergency repairs on vehicles as and when required,
- Assist the UNDP Security Unit in maintaining liaison and rapport with the local security authorities and other relevant government authorities when required, perform functions as member of an advance party if required and assist in checking, reconnaissance of routes and destinations prior to the movement of UN personnel.
- Maintain close communication with the Security Liaison Officer or Team Leader during all movements;
- Assist the Security Liaison Officer or Team Leader in accomplishing effective protective security coverage for their assigned Principals and remain vigilant and alert at all times whilst on duty and carry out training in areas of deficiencies to meet higher level of competencies;
- Ensure that the vehicle is not left unattended while on mission and conduct a 360 degrees vehicle sweep before and after any movement;
- Keep abreast of tactical operational procedures, emergency and contingency planning of UNDP procedures for road movements and participate during team training;
- Ensure readiness for rapid deployment at any time
- Execute operational procedures and practices dependent on operational environment and observe all national traffic rules and act in accordance with UNDP’s rules regarding vehicle operation and traffic safety;
- Assist the UNDP Security Unit in the execution of their duties as and where required
- Assist with standard Driver duties as and when required
- Submit regular reports on any security issue that may be faced or observed during field missions
- Perform any other tasks as would be required by the FSA/FSS.

- Secondary Education with a valid driver’s license is required.
- Minimum of 3 years (with high school diploma) of relevant work experience as in security services, civilian police force, military police or other relevant military operations with a safe driving record is an essential requirement.
- Knowledge of driving regulations, rules and laws as well as skills in minor vehicle repair and maintenance.
- Experience in the basic use of computers and relevant office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc) and
- ability to use web-based management and electronic log, file and/or scheduling systems.
- Knowledge of protocols and security requirements is an advantage.
- Previous training and experience as a Close Protection/Personal Security Team Driver would be an asset.
- Familiarity with relevant PSD communication equipment, computer applications is an advantage.
Language requirements:
- Good command of English language is required.
- Fluency in Arabic language is required.
