OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

Under the authority of the Director of the UNESCO Office for Iraq and UNESCO Representative to Iraq and the direct supervision of the Senior Finance and Administrative Officer, the Senior Driver provides reliable and safe driving services ensuring high accuracy of work to the Director of the Office and high ranking UN officials and visitors, and coordinates routes and schedules work of other drivers.

The incumbent shall:

  • Drive the Director of Office, UNESCO/UN officials and staff, including senior and high-ranking officials and visitors. Ensures provision of reliable and safe driving services;
  • Drive  both  light,  heavy  vehicles  and  Mobile  Handling  Equipment  (MHE)  ensuring compliance with security and safety regulations during trips; Conveys staff members to official destinations;
  • Make daily trips entries in the vehicles logbooks and keep records of mileage and fuel consumption Refers to the AO problems such as abuse/ misuse of equipment and vehicles;
  • Coordinate routes and, where applicable, schedules drivers and vehicles for use on a daily basis; including maintaining a close liaison with the UNESCO and the UNAMI Security Units ensuring a detailed knowledge of the most safest routes within the region. May instruct other drivers in matters pertaining to traffic and safety regulations, office regulations with respect to vehicles and equipment, and safety measures. May coordinate arrangements for major repairs;
  • Liaise with Transport workshop/contractor on the maintenance of vehicles, ensures that the vehicle(s) is/are presented for scheduled maintenance/repairs in accordance with the service schedule;
  • Ensure cost savings through proper upkeep of vehicles and accurate day-to-day maintenance of vehicles. Carry out daily checks (oil, brakes, tires, water, battery, etc) on vehicles and performs minor mechanical repairs on vehicles when required, ensures the cleanliness of assigned vehicle(s); and/or coordination of daily vehicle logs; prepares vehicle maintenance logs and report;
  • Ensure availability of required documents/supplies including vehicle insurance, vehicle registration, vehicle logs, office directory, map of the city/country, first aid kit, and necessary spare parts in the assigned vehicle; keeps track of insurance and other tax formalities. Prepares Movement of Personnel Form (MOP) and obtains proper authorization before trips, ensures MOP is completed after the trip as and when required; Ensures that accidents are correctly reported;
  • Assist when required with basic visa and customs formalities. Where necessary, translate in local language for the Director of the Office and/or official personnel using the vehicle. Delivers and collects mail and documents and other items as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Completed secondary, technical and/or vocational school education.
  • Valid driving license and valid defensive driving certificate.
  • Valid driving permit for heavy vehicles.

Work Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience as professional driver.
  • Work experience with heavy vehicles (Trucks, Buses, Armored buses and MHE).

Skills and Competencies

  • Punctuality,
  • Good knowledge of the rules and regulations involved in the safe and efficient operation of vehicles,
  • Good knowledge of basic vehicle maintenance procedures,
  • Good knowledge of the city, local roads and conditions where the office is located,
  • Communication, ability to work as part of a team,
  • Service oriented, courtesy and high sense of responsibility,
  • Knowledge of standard office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc).

Languages

  • Excellent knowledge (written and spoken) of English and Arabic.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Work experience

  • Experience in an international organization, embassy and/or UN system.

Skills and Competencies

  • Knowledge in auto mechanics and in-vehicle technology.
