Taekwondo Trainers/Genocide Recovery and Persecution Response – Learning and Pilots (GRPR L&P)

Job Overview

Project Summary: 

The Genocide Recovery and Persecution Response (GRPR) activity is implemented by Management Systems International (MSI) for the USAID MENA Bureau. USAID launched the GRPR program to guide its efforts to help ethnic and religious minorities affected by ISIS heal and restore their communities, support economic recovery, and prevent future atrocities. The purpose of this component of the project is to empower girls, build resilience, confidence and physical and mental strength so participating girls are better equipped for future challenges they might encounter in their families and communities.

Position Summary:

MSI is seeking two (2) Taekwondo trainers to run Taekwondo classes for adolescent girls in Tel Uskof, Iraq.  The Taekwondo training is aimed at empowering girls in Tel Uskof that have been affected by conflict by strengthening and improving their physical and mental strength and resilience. One trainer will train girls aged 10-14 years old, and the second trainer will train girls 15-17 years old. The trainers will provide beginner level courses up to the first level of Yellow Belt.


These classes will be run with the support of MSI’s local partner who will arrange for space and equipment and will select the students with input from the Taekwondo trainers.


The Taekwondo trainers must incorporate “Do No Harm” principles and MSI’s Ethical Guidelines. The duration of this contract will be for approximately 4 months.



The awardee in cooperation with MSI’s Iraq partner will conduct the following activities:


  • Community and family engagement: The Trainers in collaboration with MSI’s Iraqi NGO partner will be expected to engage with participants’ families to explain the program and garner support for adolescent girls to participate in the program.


  • Provide Taekwondo Training: Each Taekwondo trainer will train two groups of ten girls. The language of instruction will be Arabic. Trainings will be conducted based on a schedule to be determined in coordination with the Iraqi partner, participants and their families. Trainings will be conducted in four groups, each to include 10 girls.


  1. Cohort 1: 10 girls aged 10-14, 28 session, 2 session per week, and 2 hours per day.
  2. Cohort 2: 10 girls aged 10-14, 28 session, 2 session per week, and 2 hours per day.
  3. Cohort 3: 10 girls aged 15-17, 28 session, 2 session per week, and 2 hours per day.
  4. Cohort 4: 10 girls aged 15-17, 28 session, 2 session per week, and 2 hours per day.


  • Family Event: Trainers will  work with MSI’s Iraq NGO partner to conduct an event at the end of the Taekwondo training to showcase the skills the girls developed for their families, and participate in a ceremony recognizing their achievements, including awarding the yellow belt to those who successfully complete the program.


Expected Deliverables:

The Taekwondo Trainers shall be responsible for the following deliverables:


  1. Completion of one full course for two cohorts of girls leading to the yellow belt level.
  2. Copies of the Taekwondo training plan and design.
  3. Production of family event for participants’ graduation to yellow belt level.
  4. Participation in monthly program meetings with MSI and Iraqi partner.
  5. Monthly reports on progress and challenges and adaptations of Taekwondo trainings.
  6. End of program report.



  • Must have experience working with youth, and ideally have experience working with adolescent girls.
  • At least three (3) years of experience conducting Taekwondo training courses.
  • Ability to travel to Tel Uskof for courses.
  • Fluent in Arabic.
  • English language is a bonus but not required.
  • Experience and sensitivity to working with ethnic and religious minority communities is preferred.
