The UN Resident Coordinator’s Office in Iraq is currently seeking a qualified English-Kurdish translator on an as-needed basis to assist with the translation of press releases, official correspondence, and other documents to facilitate the communication with Kurdish-speaking communities and officials.

Expected duration

On a needs basis; typical expectations are about 1 to 2 short assignments per week, with occasional needs for translation of longer documents and reports.

Duties and Responsibilities

The UN Resident Coordinator’s Office in Iraq is currently seeking a qualified English-Kurdish translator on an as-needed basis to assist with the translation of press releases, official correspondence, and other documents to facilitate the communication with Kurdish-speaking communities and officials.

• Translate documents from English into Kurdish, and vice-versa, in no more than two (2) days (the delivery term could be extended depending on the size of the document)
• Documents mentioned above may include among other public information material such as press releases, official correspondence, new articles, website material
• Translate, at times, short documents required for same day delivery
• Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications/special skills

Competency: • Professionalism – Demonstrated excellent writing skills; high standard of accuracy, consistency and faithfulness to the spirit, style and nuances of the original text; good grasp of the subject matter. Ability to use all sources of references, consultation and information relevant to text at hand. Ability to maintain an adequate speed and volume of output, taking into account the difficulty of the text and the specified deadlines. Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office.
• Accountability: Takes ownership of all responsibilities and honours commitments; delivers outputs for which one has responsibility within prescribed time, cost and quality standards; operates in compliance with organizational regulations and rules; supports subordinates, provides oversight and takes responsibility for delegated assignments; takes personal responsibility for his/her own shortcomings and those of the work unit, where applicable.
Skills: • Communication: Writes clearly and effectively; tailors language, tone, style and format to match audience.
• Planning & Organizing: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies; identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required; allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning; monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary; uses time efficiently.
Academic Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree from a university with a course of study in the English language.
Experience: • A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in the translation of professional documents from English into Kurdish.
• Proven experience in translating press releases and other media products is desirable
Language: • Native Kurdish speaker.
• High level of professional fluency in both written and spoken English.
• Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.

Additional Information

The contractor-translator is expected to work remotely and will not work in a UN Office.
The contractor-translator is expected to provide her/his own equipment and telecommunications internet bandwidth. S/he is responsible for any costs related to obtaining or maintaining his or her own updated versions of Microsoft Office software and other necessary programs/equipment. The UN RCO will pay based on established standard rates (per word, page etc.)
