Search for Common Ground (Search) is a non-governmental organization working to transform the way societies deal with conflicts. We have over 30 years of experience in peacebuilding and are based in 53 local offices worldwide. We strive to build sustainable peace for generations to come by working with all sides of a conflict, providing the tools needed to work together, and finding constructive solutions. While conflict is inevitable, violence is not. Our mission is to transform the way the world deals with conflict, away from adversarial approaches and toward cooperative solutions. Instead of tearing down an existing world, we focus on constructing a new one. We shift the everyday interactions between hostile groups of people, so they can work together to build up their community, choosing joint problem-solving over violent means. We rely on local staff as well as local partner organizations in order to ensure our work is culturally sensitive, sustainable and well-grounded in the context.
The Community of Practice in Democracy, Human Rights, and Governance is a group of 25+ organizations working across Iraq with funding from the US Department of State Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor (DRL). This project’s objective is to support a Community of Practice (CoP) in Iraq’s democracy, human rights and governance fields to foster increased strategic coordination, improve civil society networks, and strengthen capacity and knowledge sharing. The CoP aims to coordinate and convene a 4-day annual workshop that will provide CoP member organizations with opportunities for exchange, learning and coordination. The CoP members’ areas of work include, GBV, human rights, minorities and vulnerable groups, democracy, governance, peacebuilding, reconciliation,
in addition to psychosocial, legal and economic support.

1 Virtual Meeting with Search Team: The consultant will
meet with the team, learn about the workshop topics, and
offer feedback on the workshop format and agenda based
on previous facilitation experiences.
Output Timeline – Feb 6th – Feb 17th 2022
2 Workshop Facilitation: The consultant will facilitate
approximately eight online sessions over four days (an
estimated 3-4 hours per day, broken into multiple sessions)
with the Search team’s guidance and support. The Zoom
platform will be used to host the online event.
Output Timeline – At the latest, one week after the ASW event (week of Feb 20th)
3 Facilitation Report & Feedback Session: The consultant
will provide the Search team with written feedback on
possible improvements for the various online workshop
components, and present recommendations over a 1 hour
As part of the CoP project, Search convenes an ‘Annual Stakeholders Workshop’ (ASW) event. This event creates a space for the CoP members and their subgrantees to discuss their ongoing Iraq projects funded by the US Department of State Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor (DRL), with the aim of better informing programming in these fields. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic’s effects and ensuing limitations, Search will host this year’s workshop online.
Search seeks to hire an individual with online and in-person facilitation experience to moderate the 2022 ASW event. We expect 50+ participants to attend the ASW event, and have planned multiple sessions over the course of four days. Search and DRL colleagues will host the sessions with the moderator’s support. Search will provide the facilitator, who is expected to present in English, with a detailed event agenda of workshop activities, and background on facilitation approaches for this event.
Search expects the facilitator to:
• Moderate sessions and discussions in a timely manner;
• Support participants with online platform features and online engagement;
• Present ice-breakers;
• Encourage attendees to reflect, and share thoughts and experiences throughout the sessions;
• Help generate fruitful discussions between participants.
